matt and I have done an interview for creaturedesign.org, a russian illustration art. they needed us to submit some art, and i thought it would be a good opportuniy/excuse to bring out some newer stuff that i havent scanned yet. so, here it be, some stuff i've done since the summer, the first half of some of my less hated skethes

i was starting to partake in some conceptart.org contest thing where you designed 10 versions of 10 creatures in 30 days, and then after i did these, and about 10 beetle designs, i reread their post and found out they were supposed to be only 100x100 pixels, so i stopped. that and i had to hand in this sketchbook with my portfolio to apply to acad

the idea behind it was to just draw a woman who looked like she survived an alien invasion aboard her space station or ship or whatever. just trying to put my money where my mouth is when it comes to my theories about character design. i wanted to make something down to earth, and wouldnt look retarded if translated into film, but is also interesting enough to make someone want to pick up a comic if it was on the cover.

oh yeah, im also starting to work on a larger scale. this drawing is about 8-9 inches tall, and i normally draw stuff half that size. anyway, here she be!

I'll be scanning a bunch of things soon for an interview i'm doing, so there will be an influx of art from me in the next short while. also expect photos of the (award winning) tradeshow booth i designed with my boss for the company i work for

no scanner or camera, but isight'll have to do, i got news!

hey gang, me again. its been a while.

so anyway, i got a letter from ACAD saying i'm hoppin' aboard in the winter semester coming up. IT'S DEGREE EARNING TIME.
i love my job though, as well as having evenings to myself. but I'll survive. It'll be worth it once i graduate.

so yeah, ACAD here I come. and i'm bringin' the pain. (by pain i mean hard work and effort this time)

I couldn decide which i liked better. the Pre, or Post production one. i need to get back into digital. this was also practice for that.

I looked at Joy Ang's website today. she has some new stuff up. I believe the best way I can describe how her update made me feel was that it was like getting kicked in the art-nuts. Im seriously floored, you should look her up.

So all day at work i fought the urge to not just start drawing, TRYING vainly to catch up, or at least let myself feel like i might be as good as her one day, and so when i got home, i just started drawing. i had to draw a girl, since i never do. i started sketching an alien hybrid humanoid thing, but then i turned it into a woman. i was listening to some music that reminded me of a story im working on in my head. its been in there since high school. but anyway, post apocalyptic stuff.

this woman is a 40s-something broad who's been driving through the desert heat scavenging for food and fuel, and fighting off the inevitable bands of perverts and cannibals which will, quite asuredly, exist once the "bomb drops". i didnt give her a shirt, because it made sense not to. what does she care? shes been alone for months. she might want a sports bra, so i might add one later. ive been told she looks sort of mannish, and thats exactly what i wanted. i wanted her to be unsexually nude. she doesnt have makeup, shes cut her hair short to keep it out of her eyes and to help stay cool. she also looks quite mannish because the further away someone is from the prime breeding time, the more unisex they look (think infants and the elderly, they all sort of look alike to an extreme point compared to the 10-35 range where women look the most like women)

so thats my rationale. i hope the nudity doesnt offend you. its a bit more post-modern than i usually tend to go. ive just gotta keep drawing!

The Moon Men was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1922 and published as pulp sci-fi in 1925 (Burroughs created Tarzan, by the way). One of the things I like to do when I'm downtown is to stop at the used book store, and buy the book with the cheasiest cover I can find. It was about two years ago when I recognized some tasty Frank Frazetta art, and I snatched it up right away. I didn't think it was cheesey, I thought it was gorgeous. So this book sits on the floor by my bed for the better part of a year, when one day I'm really bored and since I'd finished reading Deathbeast, I thought I'd take this one for a spin.

I couldn't put it down. The book is the best thing I've ever read, and I think I'll ever read. If you want to know what being a man is all about, read this book. The main character is the perfect role model. He represents everything I want to be and be willing to do. I can't wield the english language well enough to put into words how simply and utterly amazing, intense, original and inspiring this story is. When I read the last sentence, I caught myself just staring at the page with my jaw dropped. I reread the last page 3 times, and I just sat in the dark for an hour and a half thinking about it. It's just something to behold. My eyes were opened, and I've been in love with the story every since. If I ever have sons, they will be read this story by me. I highly recommend it. So anyway, this picture is a drawing of the main villain. When I first read the book I pictured someone built sort of like Ratigan from Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. Large, strong, beastly, but clean and arrogant and snooty. He's part of a race of men which came from the moon and enslaved humanity. They're generally described as big and ugly. That's about it. I think it said darker skin? But I can't remember. I still have to read it again.

I started with a red pencil as a sketch (I did a few previous sketches, I might get those up here in a bit), inked it with my handy Faber-Castell S brush and a 01 Staedtler pigment liner. Then I colored it with prismacolor markers (of course). I experimented, not to subtely, on this one with something my brother explained to me once. It was that when you look at a face, the forehead has a yellow base, the brow to just under the nose and across has a red base, and from the bottom of the red to the jaw line, it has a blue base. It's all very subtle and hard to pick up on, but it's there. Yellow because the skin is thin with not a lot of blood there, and is also reflecting the most light, the cheecks and nose are red because of the myriad blood vessels, and the lower portion of the face is blue because of 5 'o clock shadow, and the fact that since the face tends to angle away from the sun around those parts, it picks up the blue of the sky. So yeah, I tried that, and I think it was succesful.

Hey gang, me again. so anyway, there was a monsoon-style dump of rain tonight, it was wild, i dont remember seeing anything like it. i ran outside for 15 seconds and came in drenched and shivering. that, and lightening was flashing and thunder was booming every 5-10 seconds, and i've never seen that in the city, or up close. but anyway, before the crashing and splashing began, yae, the sky was filled with ominous clouds. ive only ever seen pictures of badboys like these on wikipedia. i took some pictures.

i uploaded them onto my computer and quickly realized they looked like something justin cherry/nivbed would use as a background for one of his paintings. so i tweaked the colors slightly so it resembled something he'd painted.

this is where the sun was last seen by me tonight. this was at 10:00. it was hard to not speed through the playground zones to upload these, i was so excited!

hey gang! yeah i'm making another post this soon. i need some practice, and i need to get better at drawing specific people, and also drawing reference pictures. so i started doing that last night. some suck, some are alright, otheres are way off, but i expect to do a lot more of these, so hopefully in a month's time, ill be able to feel like ive grown a bit

Been in the mood for DC superheroes recently. So I've been having rethinking and personalizing some of my favorites. Like Batman and Superman, namely. I'm still not done with them, so if you like what you see, then you can look forward to seeing more. I'll also be taking requests for different heroes to be drawn and/or (slightly) revamped.

So here's where it begins:

I took a crack at Batman. I've never liked a drawing I've done of him until this one. I was inspired by the new bat-suit for the dark knight, and wanted to take my own more down-to-earth approach to what he might wear. He wears a greay body suit that whisks sweat away from his skin, keeping him dry and as comfortable as he can be. it helps to keep him warm when it's cold, and cool when it's hot. His utility belt is also now made one with armor for his back so its harder to cheap out on him in a brawl, making sure to keep the black-jack zone armored. the armor also serves to support his spine. It enables full, free movement, but it simply wont bend further than his spine can handle before breaking. i was thinking about giving him a slight exo-skeleton on his legs for jumping, climbing and kicking, but that might be a little too much. theres a lot of charm in the simple grey tights, a batarang and some rope.

heres how it breaks down. just some little details

Next up is jsut a quick go at the flash. trying to fit some character under his mask, give him a face. and martian manhunter, hes really under rated:

the man of steel:

I know theres a lot of charm and notoriaty with the fact that the glasses and occasional spilling of coffee is enough to shake people off the trail, but that just doesnt jive with me. clark needs to be a dork. a huge dork. completely unappealing and totally devoid of charisma. here's a list of additions i made to the clark kent persona:
- drops his shoulders and holds them slightly forward while hunching his back. this makes his shoulders look weaker, hides his strong chest and what girl would give a second look to a guy with bad posture?
-he looks down his nose (not really shown in this picture) with his glasses (with a very strong prescription) near the tip of his nose. his eyes are buggy and creepy.
-he also just sits or stands there with his mouth hanging open. youve seen people doing this im sure. possibly a dragon shirt was also in the room?
-he buttons up the bottom button on his suit jacket. note: this is one of the cardinal sins of fashion. and the fact that its the only button he does up makes it all the worse (yes, its a sin to have all the buttons done up on your suit)....(yes, im pretentious)
-walks with his knees slightly bent. every little bit helps to hide that 6'3 stature. his hair is also messy and covers much of his forehead. it makes it easier to change the shape of his face when becoming superman.

i read jay pinkerton's article about the best movie batmans of all time, and he reminded me that robin existed, and then i remembered that i dont really like robin. so i thought, ill redesign robin so that ill like him, and here it is:

now, granted, this is the first go at the character. but i tried to try out a new design paradigm. first, i came up with the character, i imagined his persona and his situation. why is he dressing up like this? this is my idea behind it: robin gets taken in by batman, and wants to fight crime too. but this is batman we're talkin about, robin has to be pretty tight, so he has to spend some time in proving himself. solving thefts and beating up muggers (no meta-humans yet). so this is a run down of what robin would wear when hes first going out (before batman decides to let him fight crime too. theres not going to be a special robin suit built until then). hes going to have to just put stuff together. stuff that makes him look strong, dark, intimidating, and allows him to move (hes an acrobat after all).

some of the ideas i had going were the fact that hes not named after the bird, hes named after robin hood. there... doesnt that make him cool in your eyes now? i never made that connection until about a month ago, and then i was finally able to think hes cool. robin also has to be scary. he cant be a spry little ball of pencil-limbed sass. hed just embarass batman and make him not terrifying. i think i might give robin something resembling the bat-look, but most likely not. i think anyone that batman would allow to be his sidekick would be pretty darn scary anywhere.

i also thought that, especially since this is when hes starting out, he is very strong. hes an acrobat, but he isnt battle-hardened like batman is. so he needs shin and knee guards, maybe he has some bullet proof vest action going on under his shirt (not drawn this round) and elbow pads, or some small shoulder pads. he also wears sneakers, because theyre quiet and have good grip. i was thinking about giving him mountain climbing shoes, but he looked like a ballerina, and i dont think those would be the safest thing to wear while running down a dark, wet alley in gotham city (used needles and rat shit anyone?). i also didnt make him wear any black. the jeans are more brown/greenish is the actual drawing, and the reds just aesthetics. the reason he doesnt wear black is because of something i learned when i was really interested in urban exploration. dark grey (80-90%) is best because in really dark shadow, it can still get darker, but in less-dark shadow, its still light enough to blend in, but black would stand out as a sillhouette. and that be why, yaaahhrr!

the new philosophy/paradigm when approaching design i mentioned earlier is this: robin, adopted by batman, needs to go out and prove himself. he puts on some dark cloths, takes a club with him and some shades or night vision goggles. hes running around and beating up thugs, but when he gets back and is able to rethink his costume, you put yourself in his shoes and think "what should i wear that would make this a lot more comfortable or easier for myself?". this is where the character design begins. "needs extra cloth in the crotch to allow the high kicks" (ever see those chuck norris pants? thats an example), "this is really hard on my knees, i cant deal with that right now" (give him knee pads), "i need to hide my face" (puts on domino mask), then you draw this new suit. you give robin one more night to try it out, he comes back, and you add more changes "i need some weapons" give him an ASP baton and some of batmans throwing stars, "these army boots are too heavy, loud and clumsy" give him some sneakers (hes fast and athletic, needs to be able to run", and it just goes on like that, until you have a well-grounded, believable and reliable outfit for someone who jumps around in the dark and listens for screams in alleys. i hope it makes sense, but i think it helps add a life to a suit. im still just in the second stage of that with this drawing of robin. im going to let him try out a third outfit, and then we'll give him the robin-suit

oh yeah, he's got shorter hair now, too.

ive been meaning to draw a series or group of angels. different types. but this is just the first step. i plan on pushing the designs quite far. probably step on some toes, but thats always fun

i hate every drawing of cthulu ive ever seen. it always just looks like some chubby guy with an octopus for a head and bat wings. i wanted to make something that fit the description, looked unique, and also scary, not just retarded. its the first wave, but i think it kinda worked. id be scared of it, but its still lacking a lot

i did this one without reference. trying to force myself to be able to understand dinosaur anatomy a bit better. ive always wanted to be able to draw them. id like to do that for a while as a career

i didnt want to design a unique head, so i chopped it off. its some kind of sasquatch, with a leather wiener pouch

a semi blind dragon that uses smell to find its prey in caves and forests. i gave it a flower-like nose so that it could have a lot more surface area for membranes and scent-detectors. so much so that it couldnt fit in its own head completely anymore

And even if I didn't and it didn't, I'd be washed up. She'd talk. She'd yell her head off. And people would start thinking, thinking and wondering about that time fifteen years ago.

She slapped me so hard that my ears rang, first on one side then the other. She swung and kept swinging. My hat flew off. I stooped to pick it up, and she slammed her knee under my chin.

I stumbled backward on my heels and sat down on the floor. I heard a mean laugh, then another laugh sort of apologetic. She said, "Gosh, sheriff, I didn't mean to--I-- you made me so mad I--I--"

"Sure," I grinned. My vision was clearing and I found my voice again. "Sure, ma'am, I know how it was. Used to get that way myself. Give me a hand, will you?"

"You-you won't hurt me?"

"Me? Aw, now, ma'am."

"No," she said, and she sounded almost disappointed. "I know you won't. Anyone can see you're too easy-going." And she came over to me slowly and gave me her hands.

I pulled myself up. I held her wrists with one hand and swung. It almost stunned her; I didn't want her completely stunned. I wanted her so she would understand what was happening to her.

"No, baby"--my lips drew back from my teeth.

"I'm not going to hurt you. I wouldn't think of hurting you. I'm just going to beat the ass plumb off of you.

I said it, and I meant it and I damned near did.

There is apparently a difference of opinion over whether the version I edited in Photoshop or the original painting is better, so I thought I'd post them both. A long time ago i remember hearing how craig mullin's would pause movies and paint what was on the screen as a sort of practice. ive always wanted to do it, but never got around to it until now. these are from the fellowship of the ring, and they were really fun to do. i think i'll do some more and include them in my portfolio that im gonna slather around soon.

in some cases i did use a color picker : ( . im out of practice when it comes to being able to match any color, so i needed the crutch, i'll admit it. mostly in case of saruman's hand, there was such a plethora of colors, its very hard to do that sort of thing. skin is tricky. epecially old man skin, it seems. that, and the cloaks of the hobbits. green in a purple environent: not fun to figure out.

just sketchin' around tonight. i still can't wrap my mind around horse anatomy, but that'll change later today). asked ed-to-the-kwong what i should draw, and long story short he gave me the idea of a religious zealot on another world. this is what i came up with. just arbitrary "though it might be cool" stuff thrown on one guy. inspired by the tuahreg (i keep forgetting how its actually spelled) people of northern africa. those guys wear daaaark blue robes in the desert, it even dyes their skin from sweating. its unreal. so anyway, here he be. maybe something a little more heroic looking in my next update

I read c. s. lewis' The Last Battle yesterday. Curious about some things about Christianity, I thought I'd look to Lewis' input on a subject I've been thinking a lot about: basically Inclusivism. I like stories, and I love c. s. lewis, so I thought I'd learn through metaphore. It was an amazing book, astonishing really, like all the Narnia books, and lewis' ideas were pretty rad. quite deep, I'll need to reread some things.

But anyway, this is more or less the satan figure in the books. the opposite of Aslan (or, God), he's pretty spooky. the description/character design sense of Lewis was beyond his time. It's like something todd macfarlane would draw. but anyway, this is a concept sketch imagining his form and anatomy. its in no means an illustration, just a drawing. some narnia drawings will be coming i'm sure.

ps: chest might look a bit off-model and flat to the side, but its because he has a 4-5 inch wishbone stickin out (he is birdly after all)

i also tried a new way of incorporating a second ribcage, experimenting with a new way to do 4-armedness anatomy. i dont think it works so great, a smaller rib cage, more or less like a ball-socket joint, inside his main humany ribcage. 2 collarbones, too. its wierd. but i thought i'd try it.
